How we think
and do.

Not to understate our efforts in this area but at Smallworks, our sustainability commitment can be summed up quite simply as “It’s a part of everything we do.”

If contributing to a more sustainable future is a part of your vision, the fact that you are looking at a small home or laneway house is a great start. Size itself makes a huge impact on your home's energy use and sustainability. Smaller homes conserve significant resources in their construction, maintenance and operation, and laneway houses make use of existing municipal infrastructure, but that is just the start for Smallworks.

With each choice we make while designing and building your home, we consider the environmental impact that choice will have. There is no single perfect product or technique, because each project has unique site conditions, and each client has different priorities.

With the global environmental consciousness expanding every day, consumers have more product choices than ever before. Finally, it doesn’t necessarily have to cost more money to make the better environmental choice.

Our environmentally conscious designers are always working to stay at the forefront of the knowledge curve, and will help you navigate your way through these choices. Our priorities include use of local resources and businesses, and healthy materials. As technology develops and changes, we will continue to change with it.

Right now, we have chosen to work with a hybrid of systems that we feel takes advantage of the best of both worlds: factory prefabrication and site-specific hand building. Our factory prefabrication allows us to reduce our construction waste, modularize and streamline the laneway home energy systems, and reduce site disturbance. Our site finishing gives you the beauty of hand-crafted finished.
