Cabin in the WoodsDownsizing Laneway House

Compact light blue laneway house with traditional design and white trim and large floor to ceiling windows and several flowers in front

When it came time to downsize, this couple's priorities were the towering douglas fir, the garden, and the laneway house, in that order.

This downsizing haven is designed to respond to the storied landscaping that sets the stage for both homes. The name, Cabin in the Woods, belies its scale: a three-bedroom laneway home with two dens that sets a precedent for a new kind of downsizing... or rather, upsizing.

A full u-shaped kitchen in a laneway house with counter peninsula with bar seats and a table with chairs in the adjacent dining room under an open ceiling
A person in motion wearing black walking through the living room space of a laneway house with a plush white armchair, rug and modern coffee table and a black cabinet
A new full bathroom with a shower enclosed by glass doors and a narrow counter with stainless fixtures and hardware
The corner of a bedroom with a perfectly made bed that has white and burgundy pillows in front of a closet door
A small room with a chair and small side table closed by a pony wall below a sloped ceiling with a large skylight above
A sunny garden held by retaining walls with a woman wearing black planting standing on a concrete path next to a light blue laneway house
A small workshop space within a laneway house with a person dressed in black operating a sewing machine

Downsizing can be a chance to rearrange and reprioritise, creating a home that supports your next chapter.

It’s the freedom to carve out space for the hobbies you’ve been meaning to revisit, whether that’s setting up a sewing room, adding a home gym, or formalizing your home library. By letting go of what no longer serves you, you make room for what truly does.

Our designers work with every client to carve out a space that represents their lives.

Sometimes that means adding an extra den; other times, it’s meeting a client’s 6’7” son at the first design meeting—then spotting an extra foot and a half added to the door heights the next time you see the plans.

See what you can build.
