The Vault Custom Modern Laneway House

To complement or contrast?

Named after its diagonally vaulted ceilings, the vault poses a question in the back lawn of this 1925 home: to complement or contrast?

An aerial view of a laneway house with a prominent, modern black house with a dark, angled metal roof in the foreground.

Perhaps the name speaks to the two homes sharing this lot—a striking black contemporary infill and a modest white craftsman-style bungalow—bridging 100 years of architectural language across just 16 feet of lawn. Maybe it’s not a leap through time, but a conversation. A study in complementary contrast.

Diagonally vaulted ceilings push the sense of space upward and outward, creating an openness that outshines many condos of a similar size.

A spacious home for two.

At the heart of the design is a fluid kitchen-living area that flows intuitively into the primary bedroom. The layout continues through a walk-through closet to reveal a spacious primary bathroom.

A retreat for visiting parents.

A second bedroom and full bathroom are tucked into the back half of the laneway, offering a comfortable and private space for guests—without compromising the core layout of the home.

A green-thumbed paradise.

The home opens onto a generous, private patio. While we wish we could take credit for this flourishing garden, the homeowners added a shed and dove straight into cultivating their lush retreat.
